Spanning over six decades, Bob Haozous’s career is highlighted by the catalog and the Heard Museum’s exhibition aptly named Bob Haozous: A Retrospective View. The presentation of more than 75 works includes sculpture, painting, prints, and jewelry.
The exhibit and catalog visually convey how Haozous sees himself as a messenger and observer. And both tell the story of his personal commitment to the practice of ‘making’ to spread a message – even when he expects that there is no one listening.
Throughout his career, Haozous has shaped current dialogues about the complicated reality of American Indian creative expression as art, commodity, and cultural practice. Both the catalog and exhibition celebrate his authentic, lifelong interpretation of those views.
TYPOGRAPHY
The font selections for the catalog, much like the art of Bob Haozous, reinforce multiple themes expressed in his artwork.
Exo 2, was carefully chosen for the titles and main headings. Its modern look defies some established conventions – much like Bob Haozous does with his definition of “Indian Art.” Exo 2 is a contemporary, geometric, sans serif typeface that conveys a futuristic feeling while keeping an elegant design style. It’s a versatile font that includes nine weights – each with a true italic version. This font contrasts well to the main text throughout the book.
Selected for the body copy text due to its classic style and strong visual contrast to the title and heading font, is the EB Garamond font family. This typeface was originally inspired by the handwriting of Italian scholars and librarians and includes calligraphic traits, such as rounded serifs along with contrast between thick and thin strokes. With an ease for readability, it’s an excellent choice for the in-depth, copy block text throughout the catalog.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Highlighting 6o years of work created in different mediums, the photography of Bob Haozous’s vast collection was provided in various forms and from differing viewpoints. While many pieces were also documented by the Heard Museum, photo retouching was critical to creating a consistent look throughout the catalog. The intentional use of large, impactful photos, compelling cropping, and dropout images enhances and further reinforces the expanse of the artist’s work. It also gives added attention to the materials Haozous selected to create them and helps convey the important messages inspiring his art.
CATALOG DESIGN
Creating a comprehensive, retrospective exhibit catalog for Bob Haozous provides an incredible opportunity for a graphic designer. His work spans six decades, includes pieces created in many types of mediums, and the artist has a strong passion for being a messenger and observer of timely, social commentary.
The catalog look and feel are reflective of both Haozous and the Heard Museum who organized the collection over many years. The design is modern, artful, scholarly in its detailed presentation, and keeps the material fresh and interesting to the reader as one progresses through the book.
Bob Haozous is featured on the front cover through a painted self portrait titled “Old Man Looking Backward ” which is the perfect definition of a 60-year retrospective. Since he is renowned for his sculptures, one was carefully selected for the back cover. The end sheets thoughtfully highlight artwork details that provide splashes of color and content creating visual interest and deeper knowledge into his work.
The decision to use an asymmetrical, two-column layout provides ample space for detailed captions noted throughout the catalog. It also allows for many full-view images to be placed in the sidebar sections which free up space for full-page, detail views highlighting the intricacies of Haozous’s work. Giving select pieces additional prominence provides heightened communication of the artist’s messages and themes conveyed through his artwork.
